BIOGRAPHY

Born in Sussex in 1971, Mary studied at Kingston University and graduated in 1994. Her landscapes delve into the painterly essence captured in snapshots taken while driving or walking, serving as visual reminders of nature’s captivating allure.

Drawing inspiration from her love for music and pop culture, Mary’s references often touch upon album and track titles of artists like Neil Young, Paul Weller and Bob Dylan.

When she paints, Mary emphasises the significance of the initial mark-making process. Completing the artwork while the paint is still wet, she removes paint rather than applying it, akin to unearthing the subject rather than building upon it. Mary buries her paintings beneath multiple layers of stains and varnishes, seemingly sealing in the subject’s essence. She heavily relies on photography to convey the act of trapping memories and anchoring them in her art.

More recently, Mary completed a 1,000-day project – Little Paintings 365 – committing to creating an original painting daily, 365 days a year. Such was its popularity, the project sold out entirely in its first year and Mary still reserves special dates on request. These tiny landscapes (20cm x 15cm) opened up accessible art to a wider audience of art lovers.

Mary runs a highly successful afterschool art club for all age ranges as well as providing private tuition to adults.
